This week Senator Marco Rubio officially announced his 2016 presidential bid. Rubio attempted to cast himself as a candidate of new ideas. In reality, the Senator is opposed to marriage equality, supports tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy, and abandoned his own immigration reform plan to court the extreme right.

On Tuesday, Senator Rand Paul announced that he would seek the Republican party’s nomination for President. Our DNC Chair, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz responded, “Not only is Rand Paul not going to make the GOP’s tent any bigger, the tent actually collapses under the weight of his harmful policies .”

This week kicked off with 2016 GOP hopefuls Marco Rubio, Scott Walker and Jeb Bush each speaking in favor of the Indiana law which, would have allowed discrimination on the grounds of religious freedom. The GOP field speaking out in favor of the law is “the most recent reminder that Republicans are focused on one thing – pursuing an out of touch agenda at the expense of everything and everyone else.”

This week, Senator Ted Cruz became the first Republican to officially join the primary race for the presidency. Cruz, who led a $24 billion government shutdown on a personal crusade to take away quality health care from millions and to give control back to the insurance companies, has consistently prioritized tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy over the needs of middle class Americans. On Wednesday, the President highlighted how Democratic policies that focus on the middle class have strengthened the American economy. Speaking at the City Club of Cleveland, President Obama cited the “twelve million new jobs, stock market that’s more than tripled, deficit that’s been cut by two-thirds” as well as lower gas prices and lower rates of health care inflation as some of the advancements our country has seen under his leadership. Yesterday, Congressman John Lewis wrote an op-ed denouncing Republican efforts to restrict voting rights following the 50th Anniversary of the Bloody Sunday attacks in Selma, Alabama. “We should not mince words: These are poll taxes by another name, the very types of discrimination we marched against 50 years ago,” Lewis charged.

On Monday Jeb Bush responded to questions from senior citizens in Nevada, but we’ve already heard his views on policies that affect aging Americans. In addition to endorsing the Paul Ryan Budget that would turn Medicare into a voucher program, Bush has supported proposals to privatize social security and would repeal the Affordable Care Act, which saves seniors millions on prescription drugs.
