In what would now be considered par for the course, Donald Trump has been caught in yet another lie. In an article published on Tuesday, The Washington Post examined the Republican nominee’s charitable giving versus what he has promised to donate in recent years. Aside from his well-publicized struggles with giving to veterans, the Post found that in the past 10 years Donald Trump has promised to donate up to $8.5 million to various charitable organizations. In actuality, his donations totaled $6-10,000, a number smaller than the cost for some to attend the vaunted Trump University.
As Trump continues to embarrass himself, Republicans in Congress seek to remove cornerstone legislation that has helped millions of every-day Americans. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan recently released a proposed alternative to the Affordable Care Act. The proposal made clear that Republicans in the House seem determined to take away the benefits that the ACA has provided for countless people. This specific proposal would put particular strain on the poor and elderly, taking away vital programs that improve ease of access to healthcare. This is yet another example as to why it is important to get Democrats elected in Congress so we can protect the American people.
DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz recently marked the three-year anniversary of S.744, a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform bill, with a statement released together with DNC Vice Chair Maria Elena Durazo. Chairwoman Wasserman-Schultz said its passage, “marked a major step toward in fixing America’s broken immigration system, which the vast majority of Americans want Congress to fix.” But now with Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s campaign of hate, it is important that we protect the vital strides we have made on immigration reform with the Chair saying, “Trump’s wrongheaded approach to immigration and to our economy will be rejected in November -- our country simply can’t afford it.”
Along with the DNC Women’s Caucus Chair Lottie Shackelford, and Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa, Chairwoman Wasserman Schultz released a statement on the Supreme Court’s important ruling protecting the rights of women in Texas saying, “By striking down HB2, the Court has given Texas women and women everywhere a victory in the ongoing fight to protect abortion rights.” This verdict represents a major victory in the fight to protect the rights of women across the country.
Have a safe and happy weekend,
