This week, former Texas Governor Rick Perry announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination. Perry, who doesn’t believe in a federal minimum wage, also compared homosexuality to alcoholism and called equal pay legislation “nonsense.” Our Factivists have more on Perry’s extreme positions. Check it out here.
Also this week, another GOP hopeful, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, announced his support for a new 20-week abortion ban with no exceptions for rape and incest. “Once again, Scott Walker has placed his own rigid, backward ideology ahead of the best interests of the people of his state,” DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement. Read her full remarks here.
On Wednesday, former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. “The Democratic Party is the natural home for those of us who share the values and priorities of middle class families,” said Chairwoman Wasserman Schultz. Read her full statement on Chafee’s announcement here.
Our Chair also penned an op-ed for the Washington Blade in honor of the start of LGBT Pride Month. “Marriage equality now exists in D.C. and 37 states, including my home state of Florida. I was honored to be joined at the president’s State of the Union Address by one of the extraordinary newlywed couples, my constituents, who helped lead the fight to secure same-sex marriage in the Sunshine State,” wrote Wasserman Schultz. Have a safe and happy weekend.
